Bukowski Stamp? Don’t Try

An LA tour guide has proposed the United States Postal Service honor Charles Bukowski with a stamp on March 9, 2014, the 20th anniversary of the author’s death. His petition makes the point that Bukowski is “… the most famous American postal worker after Benjamin Franklin, and his landmark first novel “Post Office” is a wry portrait of the inner workings of the service where he was employed through age 49.”
Now as the book portrays working at the USPS to be nothing less then A HELLISH NIGHTMARE on earth, he might have left that part out. We’re thinking this is like asking the Defense Department to issue a medal honoring Daniel Ellsberg.
And while it provided a paycheck, Bukowski deeply resented the institution. We can’t see him here smiling about the irony of his face on a stamp.
Now before the tour guide beats us to the punch, let the Legman, who daily walks in the footsteps of Bukowski, proclaim his move to name Hollywood Boulevard and Western Charles Bukowski Square. No conflicts there; it remains as rundown as in the days it inspired Hank.
